A Note About My Film Selection Process

Starting this blog with reviews of these 5 films is not ideal - I'm pretty sure anyone reading this has seen at most 3 of these movies. I am not some fey, withering 'if-it's-well-known-it-can't-be-good' psuedo-auteur. It just so happens that I am a Netflix subscriber, and my selection process for films has a lot of randomization. I add films I am interested in to my queue, and I pick which one comes to me next (almost) purely at random. I try to keep a good balance of films on my queue: comedies and dramas, foreign films and English-language ones, classics and newer movies. Right now, it's been tending towards the weird or unknown films. So, if you're somehow reading this and somehow concerned that the only movies I'm watching will be precious, twee foreign films and ponderous English-language classics, you're only half-right.

  2. That's cool man. You've already given me some great idea to add to me Que.

Does this thing let you know via PM of some sort if somebody leaves a comment on a blog post? Because I'll def be watching some of these in the future and will post comments if you get notified somehow.

  3. Also, do you want us to make movie suggestions somewhere specifically or would you rather stick to your que (which I'm sure is massive).

  4. rubeskies, when we recommend movies to triumph, we should use the verb "q-dogg" as a kind of shortening instead of saying "add this to your queue."

for example: triumph, you need to q-dogg the movie "spider."

this is the way to do it.

  5. rubeskies:

ignore mr. huntronik, he is a little overzealous.

anyway, my queue isn't that massive - i try to keep it small and i'd love to hear movie suggestions. i can't promise when i will see any movie i queue - it really is random, so it could be a month from now or 2 years from now.

also, i do get emails whenever someone posts a comment, so yeah, go ahead and comment on anything if and when you check these movies out, i'll definitely be interested. i read your comment(s) on manhattan, i'll get back to them when i have a chance (prob late tonight).

  6. Alright, let's see here.

Some I've seen recently that I really liked:

    City of Lost Children
    Dead Man
Cidade de Deus (City of God)

A few of my all time favorites.

    Brazil
    Stranger Than Paradise
    The Seventh Seal

You've probably seen some/most of these. Let me know which one's you've seen and what you thought of them, and if you've seen most/all, I'll try some more recommendations.

  7. have actually only seen 2 (city of god and the seventh seal). 'brazil' is one of those movies that everyone likes but which i've just never got around to seeing - it's a perfect choice. jim jarmusch is also someone whose films i'd like to see more of (even though i'm not a huge fan; i have seen coffee and cigarettes and broken flowers). so - yeah, i expect to be putting these on my queue relatively soon.

  8. Nice! I'm glad those suggestions worked out. Jarmusch is a weird guy but Dead Man is just Awesome IMO. It's badass, trippy, intense and westerny all in one.

I liked Broken Flowers OK but I don't think you'd know Dead Man was by the same dude.

  10. I just thought of one you have to see:

    Wings of Desire

That movie is one of my favorites of all time.

  11. precious, twee foreign films ITT

i have seen wings of desire. like synecdoche, i think one has to be in the right mood for it, as i liked it, but certainly did not love it. but that reminds me to check out more wim wenders.

  12. Consider this another vote for Dead Man. I went through a phase where I tried to watch all of the top 50 Westerns on IMDb, and that was one of the real surprises since I hadn't even heard of it before I watched it.

If you're into Jarmusch you should also give Ghost Dog a try. I can't say I loved it, but it was interesting.

  13. I'm actually looking to watch another Wim Wenders movie but for the life of me I can't figure out which one to watch. Paris, Texas looks pretty good. Have you heard of any that are supposed to be worth seeing?

  14. that's the only other one i've heard of, rubeskies. i've never seen another wim wenders film either.
