Big Fan - 2009 - 4 Stars

Actors: Patton Oswalt, Kevin Corrigan
Director: Robert Siegel

2008's The Wrestler, written by Robert Siegel, and Big Fan are sort of two sides of the same coin. In The Wrestler, Randy 'The Ram' Robinson was participating in these tiny wrestling shows in VFW halls - the question asked by Big Fan is, what sort of a person would go to see one of these shows? The fans are what sustain 'The Ram' - who are they, and why do they act as they do?

I first saw Big Fan in theaters in September - it holds up very well on the small screen. There is one gaping plot hole which I missed the first time that knocks this film down from a 4½ to a 4 - still, a strong performance by Oswalt and an excellent examination of the sports super-fan's psyche makes for a film certainly worth viewing.

  1. what is the gaping plot hole? i liked this movie a lot. the plot itself seemed solid enough. the part where the two fans were following QB and scheming about how to talk to him was great.

  2. I don't think this is the gaping plot hole Triumph was talking about, but I had a problem with QB getting in trouble when the only witness was unwilling to talk to the police. How did they know QB was involved? The detective told Paul that no one saw anything other than him.

  3. You know what? You guys are right. I'm so tired of hearing the old "artistic license" and "suspension of disbelief" bullshit. Its really not that hard to make a movie like this believable if you want to, but they dropped the ball.

  4. i disagree, the film is believable, it's just a minor detail. (and fwiw, jtg's complaint is very similar to my own, basically that paul's friend was also a witness but didn't say anything, and there's no mention).

what the film had to do was to get paul to affect quantrell, and tie up their fates; that's a tough 'in' for a total loser to affect a sports star.
