Actors: Clint Eastwood, Lee Van Cleef
Director: Sergio Leone
The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly is a film noir set in the Southwest, absent fast-talking detectives and mouthy dames. Oh, and it's in color. I guess that makes it not a film noir at all, but it still has that feeling - moral codes are slippery, if they even exist at all, and the first thing any character does upon meeting another is attempt to deceive him.
The cinematography, setting, script, acting and music are all top-notch - the film only loses a half-star for the suspense of disbelief necessary for some scenes.

i thought the film was kind of dull. the last scene is great, but the lead-up to that kind of snoozed me out.
ReplyDeletereally? i thought the tension in the film was from the fact that eastwood's character may have no idea where the gold is buried. he says he heard the man say where it was, but we don't actually hear that.
ReplyDeleteI'm really happy it lived up to expectations. I think the whole thing is amazing, but from the point they reach the cemetery to the end is just as good as it gets for movies. Eli Wallach prancing around while The Ecstasy of Gold plays is so perfect.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to your thoughts on "A Fistful of Dollars" and "For a Few Dollars More".
JTG, you do realize that you're talking about spaghetti westerns right?
ReplyDeleteYes, I realize I'm talking about Spaghetti Westerns. But I have no idea why you're asking me that. What are you trying to say?
